The Riviera-Kaufer Seahawks outplayed the Bishop Badgers 35-14 this past Friday, August 27 at Ed Gorny Stadium in Bishop.

“We are implementing new offensive and defensive schemes and it showed with all the penalties we picked up,” Bishop Badger Head Coach George Luna said after the game.

The Seahawks received the ball in the opening kickoff and quickly scored on the second play from scrimmage with a 66-yard pass completion from Riviera quarterback Heston Van Fleet to receiver Chris Foster for a touchdown.

Lee Roy Martinez tacked on the extra-point to take the early lead, 7-0 with 10:33 remaining in the first quarter.

After both teams exchanged punts, the Badgers second offensive possession started at the Bishop 49 yard line.

The Badgers moved the ball deep into Riviera territory with several nice runs by running back Jacob Beltran and quarterback Eric Barrientes.

With 2:34 remaining in the opening quarter, Barrientes took it up the gut for a 10- yard touchdown run.

Unfortunately, the Badgers were not able to successfully convert the extra-point attempt, giving the Seahawks a one point advantage 7-6.

The Seahawks offense took advantage of some penalties against the Bishop defense, quickly scoring once again on a pass completion from Van Fleet to Foster for a 23- yard touchdown reception.

Martinez converted the extra-point attempt to extend the Riviera lead 14-6 with 1:14 remaining in the first quarter.

The second quarter was dominated by both defenses, with each team held in check offensively, until Riviera was able to block a punt attempt by Bishop, giving the Seahawks excellent field position at the Bishop 26 yard line.

It took the Seahawks two plays to put the ball in the end zone, with the scoring run coming on a threeyard run by running back Adrian Caballero with 1:32 remaining in the half.

The extra-point attempt was successful, Riviera took a 21-6 lead into halftime.

The highlights of the second quarter for the Badgers were a fumble recovery by lineman James Drummond and a pass interception by Barrientes who also played cornerback for the Bishop defense.

The third quarter started with the Badgers receiving the kickoff.

Bishop was not able to get any momentum, being forced to punt on a 4th and six at the Badgers 28 yard line.

The Seahawks moved the ball down the field with an elusive ground attack, moving the ball to the Bishop one yard line.

After losing yards on a penalty and a play resulting in a loss, Riviera faced a 3rd and goal at the 11 yard line.

That is when the Seahawks turned to the air, scoring on an 11-yard pass completion from Van Fleet to a wide open Foster.

The point after attempt failed, Riviera widened their lead to 27-6 with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter.

Bishop quickly struck back with an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Beltran, followed by a successful two-point conversion attempt with Barrientes running the ball into the end zone.

The Badgers cut into the Seahawk lead 27-14 with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

That would be as close as Bishop would get as the Seahawk defense controlled the remainder of the game.

Riviera would score once more in the fourth quarter on a drive that highlighted Caballero.

Caballero eventually scored on a 14-yard scamper into the end zone with 8:16 remaining in the game.

Riviera showed no mercy, successfully converting a two-point conversion attempt to extend the Seahawk lead to the eventual final score of 35-14.

“I was very pleased with our team’s overall effort and execution especially from our young kids who really stepped up and played like veterans,” Riviera-Kaufer Head Coach Perry Graves said. “We’re still working on polishing up our system but overall I was very happy with how well our boys played.”

The Badgers, however, had trouble finishing their tackles.

“Defensively, we are getting to the ball but we just need to finish the punch,” Luna said. “We’re hitting people but not following through as far as wrapping up when trying to take them down.”

“We saw a few good things, but a lot of bad things, penalties totaling nearly 100 yards and missed assignments to name a few,” Luna said.

The Badgers will hit the road to face a very tough Mathis Pirates squad at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3 in Mathis.

The Seahawks will host Woodsboro at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3 in Riviera.
