Local football teams enter Week One
SEAHAWKS
Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team won the ‘U.S. Highway 77 Bowl’ over Bishop 35-14 on Friday.
The water-birds will host Woodsboro at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
“Woodsboro is an excellent team that likes to run the ball,” Graves said. “They run the Slot-T offense really well and their quarterback is extremely fast. We just have to make sure we know where the ball is because Woodsboro is a team that can go the distance on any given play.”
BRAHMAS
H.M. King High School’s varsity football team lost their season opener on the road 29-16 against Beeville on Friday.
Jordan Boone caught a 28-yard pass from Julian Guerra in the second quarter. Demetre Richardson, in the third quarter, returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score. Jacob Martinez picked up a fumble, during a twopoint conversion attempt by Beeville in the third period, and returned it all the way to the opposite end-zone for two points.
“I thought we made a lot of strides from where we started during our first summer scrimmage a few weeks ago,” Head Coach Robert Wilcox said. “We have come a long way, but we still have just an unbelievable amount of ground to cover which I think we will. We’re really young and still trying to change some things that are going to take a little while to alter.”
The Brahmas host Victoria East at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
“Victoria East is extremely talented and will have as good of athletes as we will see this year,” Wilcox said. “They are well coached by Mickey Finley who has been coaching for about 35 years so he has a lot of experience, knows what he is doing and has a group of very talented kids.”
Friday’s game will also feature the retiring of Josh Johnson’s football jersey.
Johnson was a beloved member of the Brahma basketball and football team who passed away in 1999 because of complications from Crohn’s Disease.
“We’re recognizing Josh for his contributions to this program and what his family, since his passing, has done for the community,” Wilcox said.
“We just want to recognize one of our former players who demonstrated great character which is something we feel we need to instill in the young people we have today.”
BADGERS
Bishop High School’s varsity football team lost their season opener 35-14 to Riviera-Kaufer on Friday.
The Badgers hit the road and visit Mathis at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
“Mathis has speed and many of their players are capable of scoring,” Luna said. “They have a huge offensive line, great defensive personnel, have none of their players going both ways and are very well coached. Hopefully we can eliminate our penalties and mistakes and try our best to take another step forward.”
