H.M. King High School’s varsity baseball team won a tournament hosted in Alice this past weekend.

The Brahmas first defeated Corpus Christi Miller in an opening round game. Ralph Sandoval was the winning pitcher. Luis Garza went two for two from the plate, batted in a run and stole a pair of bases. Mark Trevino went three for four and Ryan Martinez went two for four.

David Robles was the winning pitcher for the Bulls who beat Laredo Nixon 4-1 in the second round. Gus Hinojosa went two for three – including a triple - and batted in two runs. Martinez went two for three and batted in a run while Michael Guerra went one for three and also brought in a run. Sandoval and Vando Gonzalez both went two for three.

H.M. King stumbled in the following tier and suffered a 10-2 loss to Corpus Christi Ray. Mark Trevino went two for three in that game and brought in a run.

The Bulls rebounded in their next outing edging Nixon 2-1 in nine innings. Hinojosa - winning pitcher - struck out 15 batters. While batting, Hinojosa went two for three and Martinez went two for four.

Martinez threw a no-hitter in the championship game where the Brahmas defeated Alice 6-1. Hinojosa went two for three and smacked a grand slam home run. Mark Trevino went two for three.

“Ryan walked six batters and hit a couple of others but still did a tremendous job in throwing a no-hitter,” Head Coach Rick Soliz said. “Mark did a very good of throwing people out at second base which helped tremendously. Good pitching is one of the keys because it helps settle a team down.”

Soliz also applauded his big hitters.

“Gus hit that grand slam and I don’t know what it is about left handed batters in that park because they just seem to explode,” Soliz said. “We’re working really hard at hitting and Mark, a tremendous third batter, is leading the team which gives us depth and that will hopefully help us out in the long run. The boys are starting to believe which I think is one of the keys.”

H.M. King’s varsity baseball team visits Corpus Christi Miller at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The Brahma junior varsity and freshman baseball teams host C.C. Miller at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday. H.M. King’s varsity baseball team hosts Laredo LBJ at 7 p.m. on Friday.
