KISD mariachi performers make big showing at Region XIV tryouts

Tryouts for the Region XIV High School Mariachi were held recently at Cigarroa High School in Laredo.
Some 20 high schools from Region XIV competed for spots in the All-Star group. H.M. King landed two students in this ensemble.
Juan Carlos Gonzalez, a freshman, was selected as the number one male vocalist for the Mariachi. Juan Miguel Flores, a sophomore, landed the second spot in the male vocalist category. This is his second time to be selected for the All- Region Mariachi.
Both singers sing with the Mariachi Del Rey at H.M. King High School. They will be featured in concert with students from Region XIV on March 27 at the H.M. King High School Auditorium. The students are taught by Mr. Rolando Molina.
Also, two Memorial Middle School students were also selected to All-Region Mariachi.
Region XIV has recently formed an all-region middle school mariachi. This will be the second year the middle school mariachi will perform.
Students in Region XIV come from middle schools in an area stretching from Corpus to Victoria to Laredo. Catherine Gonzalez a seventh grade student from Memorial Middle School was selected as the number one female vocalist for the group.
Bas Atphaisit, an eighth grade student at Memorial, was selected as the second chair trumpet player in the group.
All four will perform with the All-Region Mariachi in concert on March 27 in the H.M. King High School Auditorium. The concert will start at 6 p m. The public is invited.
