King High School’s boys and girls track teams competed at the Hub City Relays in Alice this past Saturday with many of their athletes placing in the top ten in various events. David Lewis won the varsity boys Shot Put competition. “We expect a lot out of David this year, he should be one of the top qualifiers in the state if all goes well,” Boys Head Coach Eddie Rios Jr. said. Blake Sugarek finished second in the 200-meter Run, and third in the 100-meter Run while B.J. Ripoyla placed fifth. Sugarek, Ripoyla, Marcus Ramirez and Matthew Garza placed seventh in the 1600-meter Relay. “Our sprinters - Ripoyla, Sugarek, Garza and Ramirez - are all seniors who have been through this so they know what it takes to compete at this level,” Rios said. “Sugarek is keeping up with the best people from the Calallens, the Bluffs and the Alices so he is holding on with the best of them.” Andrew Rivas came in fourth in the 3200-meter Run and fifth in the 1600-meter Run. “Andrew has been steadily improving in the distance events and right now he is ranked up there with the best in the district,” Rios said. “He has a good chance of advancing to regionals which would be awesome.” Jasmine Richardson won the 200-meter Varsity Girls Sprint. Hannah Peterson finished fourth in the High Jump and fifth in the Long jump. “Our numbers are low but the kids we do have out there I know will give their best effort in each event they compete in,” Girls Head Coach Ann Callis said. “Hannah right now is only two inches away from reaching her best height from last year in the High Jump, so she’s getting there. Jasmine’s win this weekend was with one of her best times of the season (27.09).” Peterson, Richardson, Larissa Quintanilla and Madeline Abrigo placed third in the 800-meter Relay and fourth in the 400-meter Sprint Relay.
