Former Kingsville resident, Lola Jean Hunter Garner, 80, of Houston, died Feb. 1, 2010, in Houston. She was born Dec. 12, 1929, to Albert and Willie Pearl Hunter in Kingsville.
She received her formal education in the local public school system. After graduating from Fredrick Douglass School, she went on to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Years later she became an educator with the Kingsville Independent School District. She taught at various elementary schools.
At the time of her retirement in 1999, Lola had been teaching children with special needs at Lamar Elementary School. She was also a stewardess of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Survivors include six children: Julius Hunter of Beeville; Paulette Simpson of Harlingen; Terri Bradley (James) Houston; Tanja Hunter of Missouri City; Dawn Newton (John) of Katy, and Freddie Mathis (Reggie) of Valdosta, Ga.; 27 grandchildren, 37 greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
A wake service was held Feb. 5 at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Kingsville.
A funeral service was held Feb. 6 at the Kingsville Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Chamberlain Cemetery.
