The newly established Andrew Wayne Davis Memorial Scholarship Endowment will benefit aspiring agriculture students who plan to attend Texas A&M University-Kingsville, while serving the memory to a beloved student, friend, son and brother. Although it has now been a year since Andrew’s passing, his largerthan life personality is far from forgotten.

Andrew graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business in December 2008 and had just enrolled as a graduate student at Texas A&M-Kingsville before his passing. “Andrew was the type of student that just made you want to teach,” said Dr. Roger Hanagriff, associate professor of agronomy and resource sciences. “He had a lot of interest and desire to learn.”

Andrew may not have originally intended to continue his studies in agricultural business, but after taking a course in agricultural business with Hanagriff, Andrew was determined to gain acceptance into the graduate program and to study as an assistant under him.

But Andrew was more than a student; he was giving of his time and talents to the community as a volunteer fire-fighter and was dedicated to his large number of friends and family – always lending a hand.

Attending Texas A&M University-Kingsville was quite the family tradition for Andrew, as his grandfather, father, aunt, uncle and brother are all graduates. The Andrew Wayne Davis Memorial Scholarship will celebrate Andrew’s sense of family, friendship and service while making an impact on the future thanks to the overwhelming support of so many.

This $25,000 endowment will create an annual scholarship opportunity for an incoming freshman from the Bishop area, enrolled full-time in the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences, majoring in the agricultural sciences area while maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher beginning in the fall semester of 2010.

Through this scholarship, the memory of Andrew will continue to touch the lives of many, embracing what meant the most to him and so many - family, friends and community.
