State UIL map changes the mix
Significant changes were revealed on Monday when the University Interscholastic League unveiled its rezoning of all the high school athletic conferences in the state.
Football in the 2A classification will be split into two divisions next school year, with a pair of local teams going their separate ways.
Football 2010-2012
Bishop High School will reside in District 16-2A in Division I accompanied by Falfurrias, Odem, San Diego, Santa Rosa and Taft.
Riviera-Kaufer High School will occupy District 16-2A in Division II with Banquete, Freer, Hebbronville, Premont, Refugio, Skidmore-Tynan and Santa Gertrudis Academy High School.
“Things changed a lot for us as far as competition because there are no weaklings in our new district,” Bishop Head Football Coach Larry Vincent said.
“We are going to have to show up every Friday geared and ready because you can easily get beat by anyone if you take a week off in that district because every school has a quality program.”
Both Riviera and Bishop currently inhabit District 32- 2A with neighbors Donna Idea Academy, Hebbronville, Premont, San Diego and Santa Rosa.
Monday’s realignment has Academy moving up from District 32-A where they have spent their only two varsity football seasons in school history with Agua Dulce, Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Benavides, Bruni, La Villa and Santa Maria.
“It (realignment) kind of was a surprise, not so much in that we moved up because that was always a possibility,” Academy Head Football Coach Wally Moon said. “But I saw Refugio in there with us and that took me back a little bit. One of the things I have always been told about U.I.L. is that you can think about what they are going to do and then something totally different happens.”
Basketball 2010-2011
Bishop, Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy and Riviera-Kaufer
Bishop High School will compete in District 31-2A with Banquete, Freer, Odem, Refugio, San Diego, Skidmore-Tynan and Taft. Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy and Riviera-Kaufer High School will take part in District 32-2A with Brownsville Frontier College Preparatory, Edinburg Quest College Preparatory, Falfurrias, Hebbronville, Premont and Santa Rosa.
King High Football and Basketball
H.M. King High School will remain in District 31-4A with regulars Alice, Calallen, Flour Bluff and Tuloso-Midway; and newcomers Corpus Christi Ray, C.C. Miller and C.C. Moody. Gone from 31-4A are Laredo schools LBJ, Nixon and Cigarroa who were moved to 29-5A.
“The competition in football now gets harder but I think this new district alignment is good for us as far as traveling; we don’t have to go so far,” H.M. King Head Football Coach Andrew Hrncir said.
“I think it makes the district tougher and we are ready to go and preparing for next year.”
