Lady Seahawks enter second half of 32-2A campaign
Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity girls basketball team split a pair of games last week. The Lady Seahawks (2-4 in District 32-2A and 6-13 overall) defeated Premont 51-34 on Tuesday and lost to San Diego 35-21 on Friday.
Against Premont, Kaufer scored 14 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 14 in the third and ten in the final period.
Mika Womack led her team with 21 points while Alyssa Alarcon tallied 13. Also scoring were Kierstin Bohanan (6), Sharla Irby (6), Clarissa Arguijo (4) and Gabbi Mezomo (1).
Versus San Diego, the Lady Seahawks only mustered three points in the first period and six in each of the following three quarters. Scoring were Alarcon (9), Womack (6), Irby (2) and Arguijo (2).
Halfway into their district schedule after this past weekend, the Lady Seahawks’ remaining games pit them against Hebbronville (January 19), Bishop (January 22), Santa Rosa (January 26), Donna Idea Academy (January 29), Premont (February 5) and San Diego (February 9).
Head Coach Jimmy Canchola’s mostly inexperienced team is currently focused on improving their game plan and execution.
“At this point we are a very young team that is trying to get better with each and every game,” Canchola said. “It will be a tough road ahead and I think our girls understand that our focus right now is on improvement.”
The Lady Seahawks are led by Womack’s maturity and captaincy on the court this season.
“I would definitely have to say our senior guard (Womack) has plenty of experience and is our leader,” Canchola said. “We rely on her to set the tone for us.
Canchola continues emphasizing minute details as the second half of Kaufer’s district season began this past Tuesday against Hebbronville.
“We are slowly working on our defensive fundamentals every single day and also trying to limit our turnovers,” Canchola said. “We had a high rate of turnovers earlier this season and we hope to get those down so we can be able to compete.”
Current growing pains should toughen up the Lady Seahawks who anticipate the bulk of this season’s roster to come back next year.
“I believe right now we have one senior on the team, two juniors and everyone else is either a sophomore or freshman,” Canchola said. “Right now we are instilling our foundation and it can only get better for us.”
The Lady Seahawks’ varsity, junior varsity and freshman girls basketball teams visit Bishop at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
