David Lewis David Lewis H.M. King High School Senior David Lewis has announced his intent to attend and play football for Texas State University in San Marcos next year.

Lewis committed to the Bobcats - who plan to use him as a tight end - during the recent holiday break.

As quarterback this past season Lewis completed 28 out of 74 passes for 427 yards and two touchdowns.

He also rushed 78 times gaining 519 yards and eight touchdowns. At tight end, Lewis made 13 receptions which garnered 204 yards and a touchdown.

“David has been a great attribute to our program, he is a big strong kid who did a great job for us at every position he played,” Head Coach Andrew Hrncir said. “He went through a lot with his injuries during his junior and senior seasons and really came through while staying positive throughout them all.”

Texas State was not the only university trying to court Lewis.

“He got quite a few phone calls and Texas State was on him pretty early,” Hrncir said. “Coach Travis Bush (offensive coordinator) came down and really got to know David and liked what he could bring to Texas State University.”

Lewis moving up to the collegiate ranks is a bright spot for the local populace.

“This is good for our community, to have someone like David achieve good things both on the field and in the class room,” Hrncir said. “It is also great to see Kingsville be recognized, David has grown up in Kingsville and I think our community should be proud of him.”

At TSU, Lewis will major in kinesiology and plans on making a career out of walking the sidelines.

“He wants to be a football coach and a teacher,” Hrncir said. “He is going to major in kinesiology and I think he will do great. David makes very good grades and I am excited to watch him grow and look forward to following his career.”

Taking the majority of the snaps the past two seasons, Lewis will leave a hole at quarterback.

“Right now that position is open, that is how we try to go through the offseason with everybody fighting for positions,” Hrncir said. “But we have several kids who are ready to get after it and fight for them.”

Another issue H.M. King will soon face is which jurisdiction they will play in next year once the University Interscholastic League redraws district zones this coming February.

“From an athletic director standpoint, you hate to be traveling so much if they move you down south for all of the games throughout our athletic program,” Hrncir said. “But I think we will either be placed with the Corpus Christi area 4A schools or be moved down south. You really can’t guess what U.I.L. is going to do so you just have to wait and see.”
