Kleberg County voters get ready for the March 2010 Democratic Primary that is only three months away because some of the races will be compelling to watch. The ballot shows two fathers running for one office and their daughters running for another office. Then, there is one Justice of the Peace office that has six candidates

Precinct 4 County Commissioner Romeo Lomas, incumbent, is facing challenger Faustino Erebia Jr. Meanwhile, both of their daughters are vying for the position of District Clerk along with two other people. Candidates seeking the District Clerk position are Lisamarie Erebia, Crystal L. Lomas, Melissa R. Salinas and Jennifer Whittington-Silva. Martha Soliz, the current District Clerk announced her retirement plans last year.

It’s obvious a lot of interest has been generated in the office of Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace. Mario Delgado, incumbent, faces five opponents. The candidates for this position are Sylvia Mendietta Cantu, Carmen Cortez, Gus Guerrero, John Edward (Eddie) Moreno and Ramon R. Rodriguez.

Interest has also peaked in the De La Garza, incumbent, faces Juan M. Escobar, a former District 43 State Representative.

Another race that has generated interest is the Precinct 2 County Commissioner race. Norma Nelda Alvarez, incumbent, faces opponents Octavio Xavier (Sonny) Alvarez and Joe G. Hinojosa, who held that position in the past.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Andy Gonzalez, incumbent, faces challenger Lindsey N. Lewis who filed Monday afternoon. Lewis was a candidate for this position in a previous election.

Kleberg County elected officials who were fortunate enough not to have opponents were County Clerk Leo Alarcon, Priscilla Alaniz, treasurer and Cheque De La Paz, Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace. and Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Sam Brown. However, someone has expressed running for the JP Precinct 3 as an independent candidate in November.

In the County Court at Law Judge race, Lupita Mendoza is the sole candidate. Martin Chiuminatto, the County Court at Law Judge announced in November that he would not seek a seventh term in office and has been in that office for 24 years.

Alfred Issasi, Democratic Chairman, said he was surprised so many people filed for the Precinct 2 JP race. He noted that the District Clerk race will be interesting to watch.

“There was a lot of last minute activity,” Issasi said, as people filed at the last minute Monday afternoon.

“Obviously, with a lot of candidates, there will be run-offs,” he said yesterday.

Two candidates filed for the Precinct 2 county commissioner position with Republican Party Chairman Connie Cashen. They were Chuck Schultz, who announced his candidacy early last year and Robert Rabe Jr. who filed late Monday afternoon.
