Badgers win district opener over Premont 70-60

The Bishop Badgers varsity basketball squad opened district play with a 70-60 win over the Premont Cowboys this past Friday, Dec. 18 in Bishop.

“I was worried for a little while there,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Mike Suarez said after a slow start by the Badgers.

Bishop was lead by senior A.J. Gaona with 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks and two steals.

Senior Grant Michalk chipped in 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and one steal; followed by junior Dave Gonzalez with 11 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore Jacob Beltran dropped eight points, three steals and one rebound in the contest.

Also contributing to the winning effort were junior Johnathan Villarreal with six points, three assists, four rebounds, two blocks; junior Robert Gaona with five points, eight rebounds, two assists one steal; junior Daniel Hinojosa with two rebounds, one steal and junior Brandon Haddy with one rebound.

“The guys are starting to realize their talent,” Suarez said about the team effort in the victory.

The Badgers next district match-up will be against the San Diego Vaqueros on Tuesday, Jan. 5 in San Diego.

Badgers fall short 67-65 to Odem Owls

The Bishop Badgers varsity basketball team lost 67- 65 to the Odem Owls Dec. 14 in Odem.

The loss dropped the Bishop overall record to 7-8 for the season.

Leading the Badgers in the tough loss was senior A.J. Gaona with 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks and two steals.

Senior Grant Michalk added 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Also contributing to the Bishop effort was junior Dave Gonzalez with 11 points, five assists, two steals and two rebounds; followed by sophomore Jacob Beltran with eight points, three steals and two rebounds.

Rounding out the scoring for the Badgers were Johnathan Villarreal with six and Robert Gaona with five points in the contest.
