Norma Alvarez Norma Alvarez Jennifer Silv a Commissioner Norma Nelda Alvarez is seeking a third term as the Kleberg County Precinct 2 Commissioner in the March 2010 Democratic Primary election.

Alvarez has lived in Kingsville for over 39 years and served for seven years in two nonconsecutive terms as a Precinct 2 County Commissioner. In

“My tenure as commissioner has provided me with an abundance of knowledge and experience in working and communicating positively with the citizens of this county. As a commissioner, I will continue to ensure representation aimed at a progressive future and opportunities for the citizens of our county,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez concentrates her duties on the Kleberg County Airport. She said the county airport plays a critical role in community efforts to encourage major growth that Kleberg County needs for economic development.

She continues to draft and apply for grants for improvement of projects in this area. Alvarez attends and participates at Commissioners Court meetings.

In her years as a commissioner Alvarez’s efforts in conjunction with TxDot, has helped the Kleberg County precinct 2 area obtain over half a million dollars for resurfacing of the airport runway, the terminal building improvements, the automated weather observation system and the replacement of the water well and septic system, among other projects.

Alvarez was also instrumental, along with the Commissioners Court, in obtaining the $6 million certificates of obligation bond monies that occurred this year. “Our immediate focus was to make much needed improvements and repairs to the parks; we allocated $1 million to that project’ Alvarez declared that the rest of those funds would be used for the expansion of the jail, the renovation of the Exxon building and matching funds for the restoration of the courthouse.

While in office, Alvarez continues to participate in other activities including being a member of South Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, the Kingsville Noon Rotary club, the Kingsville Woman’s club and board member of the Area Educators Credit Union.

She is a graduate of Texas A&I University, having received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees. She is currently an administrator for Kingsville ISD. Alvarez also served as City of Kingsville commissioner and mayor-pro tem. She is married to current City of Kingsville Mayor-Pro Tem Al Garcia.

Alvarez said she has a commitment to Kleberg County because her family roots began here. “I care what takes place in this community; my every effort is well spent in providing services for the needs of all services,” she said. The Alvarez family has been in Kleberg County since 1884, when Capt. Richard King gave her great-great-grandfather, Matias Alvarez, employment at what is now know as the King Ranch. Her father was born in Riviera and was reared on the King Ranch.

Alvarez asks her constituents to exercise their rights on March 2, 2010 and re-elect her as Kleberg County Commissioner, Precinct 2.
