Texas A&M University-Kingsville
The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team has been shooting the ball exceptionally well recently and on Monday night they set an NCAA record in their 115-59 win over Texas A&MInternational at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The Javelinas (5-1) drained 12 consecutive three-pointers to end the first half which broke the old NCAA record of 10 consecutive three-pointers made.
The Hoggies made a school record 19 trifectas in the game and the 115 points was also a school record.
For the first nine minutes of the game there was no portent of what was to come.
The Hoggies led the visiting Dustdevils (1-5) 19-17 and were just 3-for-8 from three-point range.
The Javelinas then made a three-pointer on each of their next five possessions as Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) knocked down three in a row.
The Dustdevils inched back into the game and trailed just 41-32 with 4:47 left in the first half when the Javelinas went on a three-point barrage.
Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) hit three three-pointers and Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Ridge HS) mixed in a fourth over a 1:22 stretch.
Then Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/ Calallen HS) knocked one down with 1:43 left in the half to tie the NCAA record.
With 59 seconds left in the half, Soza hit her fourth trifecta of the night to break the record and then with just 19 seconds remaining in the half Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) added another for good measure.
The Javelinas led at halftime 66-36 and were 15-of-20 from three-point range.
In the second half, the Hoggie threepoint shooting slowed down, but the scoring did not.
They eclipsed 90 points for the third straight game and 100 points for the second straight game.
Nikki Thering’s (Spring/Oak Ridge HS) put back with 29 seconds left in the game broke the old school record (113) for most points in a game.
The Javelinas finished the game shooting 54.8 percent from the field, made 19-of-35 three-pointers and were 16-of-24 from the foul line.
Seven different players made at least one three-pointer and four made at least three. Bullinger led the team with a season high 21 points, five rebounds, five three-pointers and three steals.
Soza added 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and four three-pointers.
Naylor finished with 17 points, five steals and three three-pointers.
Coming off the bench, Hill added 19 points, six assists and four three-pointers.
Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) had 10 points and six assists while Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) had six points and a game high 12 rebounds.
The Dustdevils were led by Courtney Dixon’s 18 points and five rebounds.
They shot 29.0 percent from the field, made 4-of-13 three-pointers and 19-of-27 free throws.
They were out rebounded by a 49-40 margin and committed 27 turnovers.
The Javelinas are back in action on Wednesday night at 6 o’clock against Schreiner University.
