H.M. King High School’s non-varsity tennis team concluded its fall season by finishing in second place in the freshman division while competing against seven other teams at the Tuloso- Midway fall tournament early last week.

Sarah Sedory won the freshman girl’s singles event. Sedory previously finished second at the Kingsville fall tournament.

Matthew Perez placed second in the freshman boy’s singles bracket. He also took second at H.M. King’s tournament a week prior.

Candice Mireles and Joliza Barrera won first consolation in girl’s doubles. Michael Zamora came in fourth in the freshman boy’s singles event. Jiselle Moreno and Joseph Galindo reached the quarterfinals in mixed doubles.

In varsity competition, Hope Castaneda and Racheal Rubio finished third in doubles at a tournament hosted by Weslaco late last week.

Aaron Gerragauch reached the quarterfinals in boy’s singles.

“This was another great week for Kingsville tennis especially after my freshman came through again,” Head Coach Ed Gonzales said. “Sarah and Matt again made the finals and so did Candice and Joliza who made their first finals. Michael took fourth place so we had different people advance far at this tournament which is a very good showing for us.”

The Brahma tennis team now gets some time to tweak their game with a pause in competitive play.

“We are basically through for the fall season so now we are going to work on off-season drills and conditioning in preparation for the spring,” Gonzales said. “Our first dual meet will be January 16 when we play Falfurrias who is always a tough team. Our first tournament is not going to be until January 22-23 when we go to Tuloso-Midway, so we have a good month and a half to get ready for that.”

Gonzales and his roster have pretty much concluded where each player will specialize in regards to singles, doubles or mixed doubles competition for the second half of the tennis season.

“We are ninety-five percent close to having decided what everyone is going to play,” Gonzales said. “We still have a few singles and couples players who are still trying to decide what they are going to stick to but for the most part everyone pretty much knows what they are going to be specializing for the upcoming spring season.”
