Jazz bands of A&M-Kingsville perform at 26th Annual Jazz Bash Nov. 24
The award-winning jazz bands of Texas A&M University-Kingsville perform an evening of beloved standards at the 26th Annual Jazz Bash Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium, located on campus on Armstrong Street near the intersection of Santa Gertrudis Boulevard. Admission is free.
Featured groups are as follows:
Jazz Band I, directed by Dr. Paul Hageman, Regents professor and chair of music
Special guest performer, Dr. Stephen Hawk, trumpet
Jazz Bands II and III, directed by associate professor of music James Warth
They will perform, among other songs, Just in Time, Back Home Again in Indiana, Who You Calling Predictable?, Blusette, Blue Chimes, Polar Ice, August Nights, Tri-Bop, Invitation, Take the ‘A’ Train, Rhyme and Mambo de Memo.
The Jazz Bash occurs each year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. It serves as a musical kickoff to the holiday season, showcasing the students of the internationally awardwinning A&M-Kingsville jazz program.
Dr. Stephen Hawk is professor of music at Slippery Rock University, where his position includes instructing the trumpet studio, serving as the Director of the Jazz Studies program, and directing the Jazz Ensemble I.
Hawk has directed 10 of Pennsylvania’s 12 District Jazz Festivals and also directed the Pennsylvania All State Jazz Ensemble.
He performs as a freelance trumpeter, where he has played lead trumpet with jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie, The Woody Herman Orchestra, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Arturo Sandoval, The Manhattan Transfer and Nancy Wilson.
Hawk is an active performer in the Pittsburgh area, performing as the principal trumpet with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Broadway Orchestra, The MCG Big Band and The Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra, of which he is the co-leader and founder, and The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra.
