H.M. King High School’s varsity football team finished its season 4-6 overall and 3-4 in District 31-4A after losing to Flour Bluff 28-0 last Friday.

Their season now over, Head Coach Andrew Hrncir goes back to the drawing board.

“Like always, you start from the get go, I have always said you win football games in the fall and start preparing for next year right after football season is over; off-season training,” Hrncir said. “We are going to get our off-season program going on Monday and begin working.”

One of H.M. King’s first tasks to conquer is reloading their roster.

“We are losing quite a few seniors this year and are expecting about 14 players returning on varsity next season,” Hrncir said. “Good thing is that our junior varsity team had a very good year and we’ll be counting a lot on our sophomores. We’re excited about the upcoming Brahmas and will take things day by day.”

Despite their season’s outcome, Hrncir still commended his Brahmas.

“Our kids played hard all year and that is all you can ask from them as a coach,” he said. “Even though things did not end like we wanted them too I am still proud of these group of boys.”

BADGERS

Bishop High School’s varsity football season came to an end after the Badgers lost to Riviera 35- 10 last Friday.

Bishop finishes their season with a 3-7 overall record and 2-3 in District 32-2A.

“We talked about a lot of things after Friday’s games but the only thing we can do right now is watch film, make the kids aware of the mistakes we made and try to remember,” Head Coach Larry Vincent said. “We just want to get in the weight room quickly and try to get going for next year.”

Narrowly missing the postseason for the second consecutive year, Vincent must now replenish his roster.

“We are losing about a third of our players to graduation right now,” Vincent said. “We are looking at having a good off-season and this spring we will go back to football details during our athletic period, start teaching again, get ready for August when we will have ‘Champion’s Course’ and just try to continue to work hard in getting over the hump.”

PRIDE

Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy capped off its 2009 campaign with a 45-0 loss against Bruni. Academy finishes with a 1-8 overall record and 1-6 in District 32-A.

“It was probably the best effort that our kids gave all year,” Head Coach Wally Moon said about the game against Bruni.

“The problem was that Bruni’s quarterback was faster than anyone we’ve got.”

Moon complimented his players’ efforts in what was Academy’s second season of varsity play and third in overall existence as a ball club.

“We had some games where we were not very close (to winning) and most of that has to do with many of our guys not being up to the athleticism of our opponents,” Moon said.

“But part of that was us getting worn down by teams with bigger squads and more experience. This particular bunch, however, played hard all year and played as well as they could so all of us are happy with what was accomplished and that this program will eventually get to where we want it to.”

Academy is expecting 18 players to return for the 2010 season.
