La Fiesta Navidena seeking local church participation
Local churches are being asked to participate in the second annual La Fiesta Navidena, the traditional Posada procession reenactment that commemorates the Holy Family’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
The event, set for Saturday, Dec. 5, features a candlelight procession that reenacts this search, followed by a festive social celebration that includes refreshments and live musical performances.
The procession will take place before the Parade of Lights and the participants the procession are asked to be there no later than 4:45 p.m.
People of all ages and religious denominations are welcome.
Attendees will learn about the history and cultural significance of La Posada.
The churches can participate with the walkers in the procession and pray the Rosary or can have their choirs sing Christmas carols or gospel music after the precession.
“This event in the past was a moneymaker and this is the second annual posada where it is traditional, and we do not sell anything,” Coordinator Rachel G. Utley said.
“We enjoy simply putting it on for the community and the children.”
The procession will seek shelter at the site of two downtown Kingsville businesses, and the procession will be denied entry such as Joseph and Mary were denied entry for shelter.
The first stop will be at Galore & More, 320 E. Kleberg St., and the second stop will be Oliver’s Jewelry, 220 E. Kleberg St.
The final destination and birthplace where Baby Jesus was born will take place at the Centennial Bandstand and Fifth Street, west of the Railroad Depot Museum.
“This year we will have a real live donkey named Pacho donated by Francisco Gonzalez, so that will be fun for the children,” Utley said. “We are looking into getting a folklorico and mariachi group as well.”
The parts of Joseph and Mary will be played by Bishop residents Adrian and Lorraine Garcia with the part of Baby Jesus being played by their infant child
The Rosary will be recited by Armenia Morales and Eva Arredondo. Guitar music will be provided by Armando Cavada.
No registration fee is required for the procession only, and no vehicles will be allowed for the procession.
The procession will begin at Kleberg St. and 8th St. at 5 p.m.
“I want to thank and recognize Tony Isidora Barbour for all of her assistance, she has gone the extra mile to help coordinate this event and get everything in order,” Utley said. “She has really picked up the ball and been a great help.”
