According to Bishop Police Chief Larry L. Lawrence, the boy was being chased by Bishop Police Lt. Robert Morales and Officer Frank Yzaguirre after they received a call from a woman who was passing by and saw a male and female arguing at the corner of East Fourth Street and Hackberry in Bishop.

Leo Alarcon Once the officers responded to the area they saw a vehicle parked on Hackberry Street facing the wrong way. As the officers were running a check on the vehicle’s license plate, a male drove off in the vehicle

East Third Street heading

Alarcon seeks a west bound.

“The officers followed the vehicle with their lights and sirens activated as the vehicle was swerving all over the roadway in an attempt to get away,” the chief.

According to the officers, as the vehicle approached Business Highway 77, it crossed and turned west bound on West Second Street and continued to drive in an eratic manner.

Upon approaching the intersection of West Second Street and Avenue E , the officers found the vehicle had crashed into the front of a residence on the 500 block of West Second Street. The officers believe the suspect was traveling approximately 55 to 60 miles per hour when he lost control of the vehicle and slid sideways before getting into the intersection, the chief said.

The vehicle struck a concrete culvert, went into a yard sideways, struck another parked car and some bushes, then went airborne sideways approximately 3 to 4 feet off of the ground before striking a large tree sideways with the cars roof, Lawrence said. The car landed on all four tires and as the officers approached the car, they discovered that the juvenile was lodged between the two front bucket seats of the vehicle with his face laying on the back seat of the car and his legs trapped under the dash. According to Chief Law-rence, the impact was so hard that the battery of the car was ejected from under the hood and traveled abut 30 feet forward, striking another parked car in the adjoining property that knocked a hub cap loose and broke the drivers side door window.

“The roof of the vehicle driven by the boy was pushed down on the drivers back, which made it even more difficult for officers to provide care for the driver,” the chief said.

Personnel from the Bishop, Driscoll and Petronilla Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene and used the Jaws of Life to extricate the juvenile who was conscious at the time. HE was transported by Robstown E.M.S. to Spohn Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time, the chief said. “He is well known to us at the deparment and is the same kid who was involved in previous burglaries around the area and has been to a juvenile detention center and drug rehabilitation twice,” Chief Lawrence said. According to Chief Lawrence, upon his release from the hospital, the juvenile will be charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle since the car’s owner, the suspects grandmother, told officers at the scene that she did not give him permission to use her car. He will also be charged with evading arrest or detention, the chief said.
