Week nine varsity football preview
Academy’s Emilio Martinez zeroes in on Agua Dulce’s quarterback during their meeting on Saturday. Martinez sacked the Longhorn’s signal-caller twice.
SEAHAWKS
Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team visits Hebbronville at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Seahawks blanked Premont 22-0 last week and are currently 1-2 in District 32- 3A.
“It is good to win one like this because the possibility of making the playoffs is still there,” Head Coach Arturo de la Rosa said. “Of course now we have to win out and play a couple of tough teams so it was very important for us to beat Premont and have more confidence going into our final two district games.”
Kaufer needs to play a flawless game on Friday should they desire to keep their postseason chances alive.
“We are going to have to play a good football game to beat Hebbronville,” De la Rosa said. “Hebbronville is a good all around team and they are going to be tough and anything can happen, but for us to be able to stay up with them we cannot make mistakes.”
BADGERS
Bishop High School’s varsity football team hosts Santa Rosa during parent’s night at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Badgers lost 8-7 against San Diego on Friday and are 1-2 in District 32-3A.
“They (Badgers) played great, Friday night was the first time where we played four quarters of inspired football which is something we have been waiting to happen,” Head Coach Larry Vincent said. “It has been getting closer and closer and that consistent intensity finally showed up. I am proud of how they fought so hard for so long and as bad as it was watching the kids cry after the ball game I am happy for them because we are still in the middle of this (playoff hunt).”
Vincent said his team will have to replicate last Friday’s intensity in order to compete with Santa Rosa.
“Santa Rosa is a very big and physical team so we are going to have to play as well against them as we did against San Diego,” Vincent said. “They do not have the overall team speed they have had in the past, and they have lost a lot of defensive players from last year including a very good linebacker, but they are still going to show up with their A-game and get after you because they are in the same boat we are in fighting for a playoff spot.”
BRAHMAS
H.M. King High School’s varsity football team hosts Calallen during parent’s night at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Brahmas walloped Laredo LBJ 43-14 with six rushing touchdowns on Saturday. Scoring were David Lewis (twice), Demetre Richardson (twice), Blake Sugarek and Vando Gonzalez.
“The kids came out and played hard, they had a good game and are excited about the rest of the season,” Head Coach Andrew Hrncir said.
In order to contend with the Wildcats, the Brahmas are going to have to play their A-game.
“We have to take care of the football and this is one of those games that we are going to take play by play and just see what happens at the end of the game,” Hrncir said. “I think our kids are excited about this Friday night.”
Hrncir and his team are shrugging off speculations which have already dismissed them as a playoff qualifier.
“No, we really do not worry about what anyone says about us,” Hrncir said. “We are just going to go out there and try to take care of our business.”
