Badgers lose to Longhorns 41-15
The Bishop Badger varsity football team lost to the Hebbronville Longhorns this past Friday in Hebbronville.
“Turnovers and missed assignments on offense and defense hurt us…no time to quit and pout, we must play hard all four quarters,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Larry Vincent said after the game.
Bishop won the coin toss, electing to defer to the second half, thus allowing the Longhorns to receive the opening kickoff.
The Badger defense did not allow a first down in the two offensive possessions Hebbronville had in the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the Badger offense could not sustain a drive of their own, fumbling the ball at the end of a long run.
The opening quarter ended in a 0-0 tie and the Longhorns facing a 3rd and 14 at the Hebbronville 47.
The Longhorns opened the second quarter with a long pass completion to the Badger 11 yard line.
Hebbronville would eventually score on a six yard touchdown reception, followed by a successful extra point attempt, giving the Longhorns a 7-0 lead with 10:27 remaining in the second quarter.
The Badger’s second offensive possession of the game started at the Bishop 10 yard line.
It took the Badgers only two plays to move the ball 90 yards for the score, highlighted by an 87-yard run down the sideline by senior running back J.P. Escobar into the end zone.
Senior kicker Tommy Cavazos split the uprights on the extra point attempt to knot the game at 7-7 with 9:18 left in the first half.
Hebbronville went on to score two more times in the second quarter to take a 21-7 advantage into intermission.
The Longhorns continued to outplay the Badgers in the third quarter, scoring on a 64 yard pass completion and a four yard run to extend the lead to 34-7 at the end of the quarter.
Hebbronville scored once again in the final quarter with a 14 yard run into the end zone on a drive that went 49 yards on four plays.
The Badger offense continued to fight hard, moving the ball 72 yards on eight plays, including the one yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Alan Scott with under a minute remaining in the contest.
Bishop converted the two point attempt on a run by sophomore running back Jacob Beltran, closing the scoring at 41-15.
With less than half a minute remaining in the game, Hebbronville took a knee to run out the clock and collect a 41-15 victory over the Badgers.
“We gave up big plays and it cost us at the end,” Badger Assistant Coach George Luna said after the game.
The Badgers will host the San Diego Vaqueros at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, at Ed Gorny Stadium in Bishop.
