These are your Brahmas, Kingsville
One of the things I try never do with my weekly column is single out student athletes for their efforts on the field in a bad way.
Despite their constant claims to the contrary, high school students are still kids. They have yet to experience real life and need plenty of guidance whether they admit it or not. We should consistently support our local sports teams no matter how the season unfolds. Case in point, the H.M. King Brahma varsity football team; a squad I truly believe is better than their current season record (2-4 overall, 1-2 district) suggests.
In his three years at the helm, Head Coach Andrew Hrncir, his staff and his boys have scratched and clawed through District 31-4A. Say what you will about the past three years, but allow me to offer my perspective which is influenced by absolutely no one.
Like all good coaches, Hrncir is trying to build a program that prepares players on the middle school teams and all the way up to the high school ranks. I firmly believe that if you do not train your beginners properly, you will suffer for it every year until they eventually graduate high school.
Now one of the biggest juggling acts Hrncir has had to do this season and last is at the quarterback position.
In Year One, Randy Vega was the starter for the entire season and this was while he also played defensive back and punted; the poor guy never left the field and I never bashed him in the sports page because he left his all on the field.
David Lewis became the starter last year and was developing nicely until he hurt his shoulder against Corpus Christi Miller just before the Brahmas commenced district play. In comes Vando Gonzalez who does a good job despite last season’s outcome. Lewis begins this season as the starter and things just did not work out.
In comes Julian Guerra. Whatever comments you have about Guerra are best swallowed because this kid keeps strapping on his helmet and going through his own personal baptism by fire. He has thrown touchdowns and interceptions but I am not going to bash this kid for his efforts and mistakes AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU.
These are not the Dallas Cowboys or the Texas Longhorns. These are the H.M. King Brahmas whose roster are filled with kids from our community.
Personally, I am following this team whether they make the playoffs or whether the season ends after Week Ten.
Either get behind the Brahmas or stay home on Friday night. To all of you on the Brahma varsity football team, you have four games left in your district season. MAKE THEM COUNT.
