Pride

Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy High School’s varsity football team has a bye this week. Academy lost to La Villa 42-19 this past Friday.

Against La Villa, Lazaro Garcia intercepted a shuffle pass and returned it for a touchdown. Joel Obregon caught a pair of touchdown passes from Connor DeLaney.

Head Coach Wally Moon said the Pride’s effort on Friday was their finest thus far.

“I thought it was the best game we have played so far,” Moon said. “Our kids gave their best effort, came out after La Villa pretty good.”

Academy’s defense charged out of the gate at La Villa.

“Defensively, we did some things that caused them some problems,” Moon said. “But then we blew a couple of defensive assignments and when you are blitzing a lot then you are going to get burnt.”

The Pride also gift wrapped the ball numerous times.

“We turned the ball over on offense too many times but that is a part of having young ball players,” Moon said. “Being as young as we are, we are going to make some of those kind of mistakes.”

Academy will use this week’s bye to both alleviate and sharpen their A-B-C’s.

“We have some guys who need to heal up, we have a couple of shoulder injuries which are being treated,” Moon said.

“At the same time we are doing a whole lot of teaching this week, following up on what we did well on Friday night, emphasize the positives and try to correct some mistakes. We’ll practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and give them Thursday and Friday off.”

Brahmas

H.M. King High School’s varsity football team visits Tuloso-Midway at 7:30 p.m. the Brahmas lost to Alice 40-0 last Friday. One out of the three Brahmas’ injured in that game was back on the practice field on Monday.

“Demeter Richardson (turf toe) is back practicing,” Head Coach Andrew Hrncir said. “Vando Gonzales (concussion) and John Le (knee) are day to day.”

The Brahmas have to leave behind last week’s bad memories with their playoff hopes still very much alive.

“We talked about forgetting about last week, it’s over so let’s take a step forward and get ready for a big game against T.M. this week,” Hrncir said. “They (Brahmas) know how it feels and are not very happy about it but I think we will be able to move on and get ready for the rest of the season.”

Once the laughing stock of District 31-4A, the Warriors reached the playoffs last year and currently hold a winning overall record.

“They are not bad at all, T.M. is 4-1 right now, doing things right and suffered a tough one against Calallen last week,” Hrncir said. “But it is going to be a battle Friday night and we are excited about it.”

Badgers

Bishop High School’s varsity football team begins District 32-2A competition by hosting Premont at 7:30 p.m. during ‘senior night’.

The Badgers are coming off of a bye week which gave them time to rest, heal and go over details.

“The bye was very beneficial for us as we have been struggling with some basic fundamentals,” Head Coach Larry Vincent said. “It gave us an opportunity to spend three days on just basics like reads and on our offense.”

With rest time over, Bishop will have to tussle with a feisty Premont squad.

“Premont has a scrappy bunch of kids, they are physical and run well,” Vincent said. “The thing that hurts them is numbers, kind of like us, and we are almost mirror images of each other right now. We are both physical teams and they have done things to hurt themselves and we have done the same thing so in order to beat them we have to eliminate our mistakes and be physical for four quarters and basically wear them down and I think our conditioning right now is pretty darn good and our kids get after it.”

Seahawks Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team begins District 32-2A play at Santa Rosa at 7:30 p.m. The Seahawks had a bye last which they utilized to get in better shape.

“We did a lot of conditioning but also began preparing for Santa Rosa’s offense and defense,” Head Coach Arturo de la Rosa said. “Knowing we were going to be off, we took things slow but this week we are going to jump back into practice hard.”

Santa Rosa is one of the formidable 32-2A teams Kaufer will have to deal with this season.

“They have always been big and have lots of kids, most of whom play only one way where we have more playing both ways,” De la Rosa said. “We know this is a tough district with teams like Santa Rosa, Hebbronville and San Diego who have the amount of kids that they do which is a plus for them. So we are looking at it that this is going to be a tough district season to compete with all of them but we have worked very hard with our focus on finishing amongst the top three.”
