Jordan Boone zips past Laredo Cigarroa’s defense during H.M. King High School’s varsity football District 31-4A win (35-6) last Saturday. The Brahmas host Alice at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy High School’s varsity football team hosts La Villa in Bishop at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Pride are coming off of another tough loss, this time to Benavides (48-0) last Friday.

“Our summary of Friday’s game was that we just did not get it done,” Head Coach Wally Moon said. “We are struggling on offense and that puts our defense in a tough spot, because we have a hard time keeping the other team out of the end zone.”

The Pride’s toughest struggle has been in composing a running game.

“Our biggest problem is in our running game because I really do not have a running back,” Moon said. “The kid we thought would be our starter is out injured and so are a couple of other guys we thought would step up. So if you can’t run the football, you really do not have an offense.”

Which has led to Academy’s defense spending too much time on the field.

“I think our defense has played pretty well, it may not sound like that with as many points as we have given up,” Moon said. “But we have a couple of young players who have competed very hard as we are still a work in progress because most of our guys have very little playing experience and they’re getting tough on-thejob training.”

Brahmas

H.M. King High School’s varsity football team hosts Alice at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Brahmas opened their District 31-4A season with a 35-6 win over Laredo Cigarroa on Friday. David Lewis rushed for two touchdowns. Sean Cantu scored on an interception return. Marcus Ramirez caught a touchdown pass from Julian Guerra. Demetre Richardson scored on a run.

“It was a long trip to Laredo and we started off a little slow and sluggish,” Head Coach Andrew Hrncir said. “But we picked it up in the second half and the kids played well.”

Hrncir expects Friday’s game to be intense with the Coyotes coming off of a tough loss to Calallen.

“We are going to come out there and make some big plays and I think we match up good against them,” Hrncir said. “Our kids are going to be ready, it is going to be a great atmosphere and we are excited.”

Calallen’s win over Alice have many already handing the Wildcats the District 31- 4A crown.

“I think it is a little soon, we all have played just one district game and there are a lot of good teams left in this district,” Hrncir said. “This is a very competitive district, you have Tuloso-Midway who is undefeated right now, Flour Bluff is playing well, don’t count us out and you still have Alice which is a good football team and their game against Calallen was a lot closer than the score showed.”

Badgers

Bishop High School’s varsity football team has a bye this week. The Badgers stomached a 35-6 loss to Monterrey Tech last Friday. Head Coach Larry Vincent let his boys get away briefly this week.

“The first thing we did was give the kids Monday off, a little break there, sent them to tutoring to try and get their grades taken care of before the end of the first six weeks,” Vincent said. “This week we are going to spend a lot of time on basic fundamentals in practice. Instead of spending 10 or 15 minutes on one aspect, we are going to spend 30 minutes a day this week to try and solve some of our problems.”

After enduring a tough 1-3 non-district campaign, the Badgers are spending a lot of time viewing footage.

“We watch a lot of film and constantly point out the mistakes and the fact that it is not what somebody else is doing that is hurting us but rather because of our own mistakes,” Vincent said. “It may be a lineman missing an assignment, or a receiver missing his assignment or something else but it is all our doing.

The kids are not okay with losing and believe it or not we have made improvements while trying to stop doing the things that are hurting ourselves.”

Seahawks

Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team has a bye this week. The Seahawks finished their nondistrict season by whipping Premont 31-16 last week.

Versus Premont, the Seahawks’ first points came through Heston Van Fleet connecting with Chris Foster on a 40-yard pass. Kevin Jimenez’s successful extra point put Kaufer ahead 7-0. Van Fleet later scored on a one-yard run.

The water-birds’ defense tacked on two points with a safety. Justin Jimenez sprinted 47 yards on his way to a touchdown. Jacob Salinas ran the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Salinas tallied Kaufer’s final touchdown on an 8-yard run.

Head Coach Arturo de la Rosa gauged and applauded his team’s effort.

“We still made a few mistakes but played a lot better,” De la Rosa said. “A lot of our kids play both ways but we played a heck of a defensive game and they deserve it all.”

After their bye, the Seahawks visit Santa Rosa in their District 32-2A opener on October 9.

“Right now we are holding shorter practices but really focusing on conditioning,” De la Rosa said.
