Badgers versus Monterrey Tech Rams game statistics posted

JACOB ORTEGON ...Offensive player of the week JACOB ORTEGON ...Offensive player of the week The Bishop Badgers hosted the Monterrey Tech (Mexico) Rams this past Thursday, falling 35-6 when everything was set and done.

The Badger offense struggled once again due to several turnovers (five fumbles and two interceptions) that ended Bishop drives.

Bishop tallied 15 first downs to the Rams six.

The Badgers collected 287 total yards on 60 offensive plays while the Rams had 323 total yards on only 24 offensive plays.

Bishop continued to dominate the time of possession statistic with 33:54; meanwhile the Rams controlled the ball 14:06.

Leading the Badger offense this week was senior quarterback Jacob Ortegon with 88 yards rushing on only 17 carries for an average of 4.8 yards per carry.

Fellow senior full back Zack Lowman added 97 yards on 26 carries and Bishop’s lone touchdown.

Also contributing to the Badger offense was senior running back David Herrera, picking up 68 yards on five rush attempts.

JAMES DRUMMOND ...Defensive player of the week JAMES DRUMMOND ...Defensive player of the week On defense, junior defensive tackle James Drummond led the Badgers with 4 tackles (4 solo) including three tackles for a loss, followed by senior defensive tackle D.J. Cowger with 3.5 tackles (3 solo, 1 assisted) including one tackle for a loss.

On special teams, senior kicker Tommy Cavazos punted three times for 91 yards including one punt inside the 20 yard line.

Sophomore kick returner Jacob Beltran returned three punts for nine yards and three kickoff returns for 18 yards.

This week’s offensive player of the week honors goes to senior quarterback Jacob Ortegon with 88 yards on only 17 carries while junior defensive tackle James Drummond earns defensive player of the week by leading the Bishop defense with four tackles, including three for a loss.

“We got two weeks to figure things out…we are officially 0-0 going into district play,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Larry Vincent said.

The Badgers will open district play against the Premont Cowboys at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9 at Ed Gorny Stadium in Bishop.
