ZACK LOWMAN ...Offensive player of the week ZACK LOWMAN ...Offensive player of the week The Bishop Badgers varsity football squad celebrated homecoming with a lopsided 38-8 victory over the Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy Pride this past Friday in Bishop.

The Badgers offense dominated early in the game, scoring four times in the first half.

Bishop accumulated 15 first downs to Academy’s 10.

The Badgers gained 270 total yards on 51 offensive plays, while the Pride picked up 128 total yards on 46 plays.

Time of possession tipped over to the Badgers with 20:50 to the Pride’s 12:27.

Academy’s lone scoring drive came early in the second quarter, going 53 yards on nine plays.

The Badger offense was led once again by senior fullback Zack Lowman, gaining over 200 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Jacob Ortegon added almost 50 yards on 10 carries and accounted for two touchdowns.

NICK PACHECO ...Defensive player of the week NICK PACHECO ...Defensive player of the week Ortegon also completed two of five pass attempts for 15 yards.

Lowman was the recipient of one pass completion for eight yards, while senior receiver Taylor Lee accounted for the other pass completion.

On defense, junior linebacker Nick Pacheco had an outstanding night, totaling five tackles (4 solo, 2 assisted), two tackles for a loss and one sack of the Pride quarterback.

Fellow linebackers, senior Alex Guajardo and freshman Alan Scott each collected five tackles of their own.

The Badger defense totaled three interceptions in the game, including a 37-yard interception returned for a defensive score by junior linebacker David Perez.

Meanwhile, the Pride offense was led by sophomore quarterback Connor DeLaney; completing three of nine pass attempts for 40 yards.

The Pride ground attack was led by junior full back Emilio Martinez, gaining almost 50 yards on seven carries.

Leading the receiving corps, freshman running back Uriah Luna had two receptions for 23 yards, while DeLaney had one reception for 34 yards.

The Academy defense was led by senior linebacker Chris Ainsworth with 8.5 tackles (7 solo, 3 assisted), followed by senior defensive lineman Izzy Camacho and junior defensive end Emilio Martinez with six each.

The Pride defense also accounted for two points on a blocked extra-point attempt by the Badgers.

Teaming up for the score was DeLaney with the block and junior defensive back Joel Obregon with the return.

This week’s offensive player of the week for the Badgers goes to Lowman, who led the Badgers with 218 yards of total offense in the game and two touchdowns.

Badger defensive player of the week honors goes to Pacheco for leading the Badgers with five tackles, two for a loss and a quarterback sack.

The Badgers will host the Monterrey Tech Rams at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24 at Ed Gorny Stadium in Bishop, while the Pride will travel to face the Benavides Eagles at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25 in Benavides.
