ArtWalk II set for Oct. 3
The Kingsville Historic Downtown District Association will presents its second annual Downtown ArtWalk Festival Saturday, Oct. 3 from 1 to 7 p.m. in the 200 and 300 blocks of East Kleberg Avenue.
The streets will be blocked off and parking will be available next to Wilson’s True Value, the King Ranch Saddle Shop parking lot or behind Harrel’s Kingsville Pharmacy.
The acclaimed musical group Del Castillo from Aus- will be included in the featured entertainment for the Art- Walk.
The ArtWalk will feature local artists from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Playhouse of Design.
These artists, along with the Kingsville Ballet Folklorico, TAMUK Jazz Band, TAMUK Ballet Folklorico, All American Cheer, Art In Motion, Tae Kwon Do Academy and the Santa Gertrudis Tiniklers, will perform at various locations in the 200 and 300 blocks of Kleberg Avenue.
There will also be a Kid’s Corner at the Cherry Tree Tea Room during the ArtWalk. At this location children can spend their time immersed in a world of art and creativity. As kids visit this area they will discover their own artistic talents as they decorate homemade cookies, paint pumpkins and wind chimes, and make pumpkin weaving mats — all free of charge.
Downtown restaurants, including Harrel’s Soda Fountain and Cherry Tree Tea Room, will be open for lunch and those who attend ArtWalk are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to shop, dine and enjoy the historic downtown Kingsville atmosphere.
“Last year’s ArtWalk was a success and we hope this year will be an even bigger success,” Rose Morales, Co-Chair of KHDDA, said.
“With the inclusion of musicians this year, we feel there will be much more to do while you stroll the historic downtown shops.”
Another highlight of the ArtWalk will be a Sidewalk Chalk Competition open to the public. All contestants will be given one box of colored chalk, which they will use to create art that is appropriate for all age groups. While this chalk art gallery is temporary, the memories are lasting. Space is limited, therefore advance registration is encouraged. Pick up registration forms at King Ranch Saddle Shop.
Also exhibiting their creatively beautiful work will be the Saturday Quilters. There will be hand crafted quilts on display in the 200 block of Kleberg Avenue.
Capture all of the fun at an October photo setting in front of Candy Bouquet, located in the 300 block of Kleberg Avenue. The event is sponsored by the Mark Cisneros Center for Young Children on the TAMUK campus.
Along with enjoying the fine arts and entertainment, visitors can indulge themselves in a taste of wines from around the world.
The wine tasting area will be set up to include 30 different wines from Texas along with exotic wines from numerous countries.
Del Castillo will play during the wine tasting from 4 to 6 p.m.
Del Castillo has become a symbol of the cross-cultural power of music with its blend of Flamenco, Rock, Latin, Blues, and World music that is being referred to as Nuevo Americano. Between the release of their first CD back in 2001, to their 2006 release, Del Castillo has received 18 awards, including the South by Southwest/Austin Music Album of the Year, Band of the Year along with ASCAP’S Best Independent Group of the Year honor.
“This event continues to grow, and it is only through the dedication of Robin Robertson, Kristine Canales, Carol Ann Anderson, Eddie Aguilera, and others that it is all coming together.” said Morales.
“We all have a desire to make Kingsville shine and become a place that we can all enjoy.”
